The goal is to perform all operations in a single setup. Multifunction machines use multiple turrets and spindles to greatly enhance the speed and flexibility of the machine. The turret can approach the part from behind, which allows more room for large-diameter parts. Turrets are preferred for large work because they don’t require clearance under the part. Turrets are also the norm on larger CNC lathes and multifunction machines. This adjustment can make tool changes very fast for the tools on that station. Another possibility is to install small gang plates in some of the turret stations. Warfieldįor those kinds of parts, perhaps a better “competition” would be gang lathes vs. Many machinists wish they could use their gang lathes for everything, but they have turret machines for parts that are too long and thin to be made with a gang lathe.Ī CNC lathe with a turret (left) and gang tooling (right). They are a must for long, skinny parts that need a tailstock for support.

My question is what changes are needed to run a lathe with gang tooling, so that the program will run to the end without prompting for tool change.

Looking in the HAL file, I see the toolchange is set for manual. The program prompts for a tool change as it defaults to manual. I've now managed to get the tool offset table etc figured out, and can run a program with multiple tools. Seeing the Z stepper following the spindle speed change on a G76 cycle made the effort of learning very worthwhile.

I've made progress, and have got a working configuration with quadrature threading. I've also fixed up a small variable speed motor and 60 slot disc, with three opto isolators for index, spindle phase a, and spindle phase b.

I'm using an old pc with BOB, and some drivers/steppers for testing.
